James Dean Phillips

James Dean Phillips was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma February 10, 1938 to Yale and Clarice Phillips. Jim passed away on January 21, 2022 at the age of 83 in the Omaha area. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sharon Elder Phillips, two sons, Jeffrey D. Phillips (Liliana) and Steven Y. Phillips (Linda), along with his two older brothers, Jerry (Roylene) and Bill (Ginny) Phillips and two younger sisters, Barbara Phillips Johnson (Ron) and Joanie Phillips Qualls (Bill). Also, he is survived by his grandchildren, Jeff’s children, Ashley Phillips Ramirez (Guillermo), Sydney Phillips and Maia Phillips, along with Andrew Miano (Liliana’s son) and Steve’s children, Nicholas (Sarah) and Julia Phillips Keller (Weston) and Jacqueline Phillips. Jim has five great granddaughters, Sienna and Gianna from Ashley, Ada and Cleo from Nick and Elle from Julia. Jim’s legacy will be embraced and cherished by all his loved ones carrying his memories and love throughout their lives.

Jim’s family, friends and faith were the core of his life. Jim was known as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather with pride of family being very apparent. His gentle disposition and friendly, kind heart was his defining character, known simply as a happy man to all he met. His sons and grandchildren all cherished their role model as a humble man of integrity, faith, respect and dignity that walked the walk with keeping life simple. His other life appreciations were golf, bowling, Chiefs football and Royals baseball. He and Sharon moved to Omaha, Nebraska to be close to family in 2014 after living in Stilwell, Kansas and the Kansas City area most of their lives.

Jim worked for Kansas City Life Insurance Company for 37 years as the manager of real estate investments participating in softball, bowling and golf leagues, retiring in 1995. After this, he worked for a very good friend, Tom Shyver, at Royal Mechanical Services in Stilwell, Kansas with 3 separate “retirements” with the last in 2001.

He was the president of Overland Park Community Church in Stanley, Kansas for many years and served as a Deacon and board member, along with volunteering as the president of the Kansas City Water Garden Society providing education, tours and gifts of water features to the community. He worked hard and took great pride in everything he accomplished with accolades on his yard, his church support and volunteer efforts.

Growing up, he was very involved with his father and brothers achieving Life Scout and Order of the Arrow while traveling to Philmont Camp in New Mexico and acting as a Senior Scout. Jim’s parents and family moved from Oklahoma to Texas, to California and to their final family location in the Kansas City area. He graduated High School at Shawnee Mission High School (North).

Jim passed away peacefully with his family around most of the week and day at Oxbow Assisted Living in Ashland, Nebraska. In a very short time, he was a favorite of the staff and residents with his friendly and caring ways even as dementia became a greater challenge.

Services in celebration of Jim’s life will be held at Roeder Mortuary, 11710 Standing Stone Dr. in Gretna, Nebraska on January 29th at 11:30a.m. with the Visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. Out of respect for everyone’s health and safety, we will be asking visitors to wear masks and social distance as much as possible. Unfortunately, we will not be having a meal after the funeral due to this as well. Jim’s wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be there to honor him.

Tony C. Miller

Omaha – Tony Charles Miller, born on April 27th, 1954 in Omaha, NE
to Father, Charles Miller and Mother, Daisy Hunt. He was one
of 9 children. 3 brothers, Barney Minton, Darwyn Minton, and
Harold Minton and 4 sisters, Fredricka Minton, Vanessa
Johnson, Sheila Minton, and Regina Sampson (Dana).
Order of Service
Tony was a proud Alumni of Tech High School, Omaha, NE,
class of 1972. He joined the United States Army immediately
following his graduation, serving proudly full active and
reserves. After serving in the military, he worked in a variety
of roles in the community and continued his education earning
a variety of certifications and college credits. A true jack of all
trades. Tony could remodel a house, fix a car, and preach a
sermon. Two roles he was very proud of was his work with
Bergan Mercy as an Engineer and Open-Door Mission as the
Director of Facilities.
Over the years Tony loved being a member of the Zac Riders
Motorcycle Club, known as “Baby Bull”. He enjoyed riding his
bike, taking road trips, being outdoors, and spending time
with his family and friends over a good meal. Tony possessed a
level of Love and Good Energy that is hard to come by these
days. He had a great sense of humor and
stayed well informed on just about everything.
Tony is survived by 3 sons; Lamott Parmer (Alisa), Anthony
Miller, Peyton Zyla and 4 daughters; April Williams, Rodeshia
Miller, Lania Valentine and Danielle Miller. 21 grandkids and
30 great-grandkids with a host of family and friends to cherish
his memories. Tony had a unique love and relationship with
Essie Miller, they remained family and friends until his
departure. He was proceeded in death by his parents, brother
Barney, and Great Grand Daughter, Kamari Miller.

Visitation Friday 10 – 11 AM with Funeral Service 11:00 AM Friday (1/28/22)  at Roeder Mortuary. Burial Monday 2:00 PM at Omaha Omaha National Cemetery.

Lawrence “Larry” Leo Brown

Lawrence Leo Brown was born on November 25th, 1941 in Morrilton, Arkansas to Lee Brown Sr. and Christina Hall. He graduated from L.W. Sullivan High School and studied at Arkansas Baptist College.

Larry enlisted in the United States Air Force in the 1960s and would go on to be a proud member of the American Legion Post 30 for 43 years. He was also a member of the Midwest Athletic Club.

Larry loved working with children and youth. He worked many security positions over the years, the most loved were his positions at Ashland Park Robinson and Gateway Elementary with Omaha Public Schools. He also led the American Legion Post 30 drill team and volunteered for the North Omaha Boys Club.  Another one of his passions was music. Larry was a blues, jazz, R&B and soul enthusiast. He deejayed for decades – known as The Bald One – and filled his home with hundreds of vinyls, cassette tapes and CDs.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Alfreada and Barbara; brother Lee; and daughter Jackie.

He is survived by his sons Cal, Brandon, Larry, Victor, Paris, and Rick; daughters Rose and Sheila; and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.

He will be remembered fondly by all that knew him.

Dennis Earl Hopgood, Sr.

“Coach” Dennis E. Hopgood, Sr. AKA “Buster”

January 23, 1963 – January 9, 2022

Preceded in death by his parents, Conwell Hopgood and Lessie B Hopgood.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Lois Allen – Hopgood; son, Dennis Jr.; grandson, Clay Hopgood; adoptive daughters, Angel and Alexa Whitehall, sisters; Bernadette Patrick (Cedric), Aileen Warren (Thomas, Anita Hopgood, brother; Jeffery (DeAmber) Hopgood.

Dennis graduated from Omaha South High School; he continued his education at Morningside College.

After returning home from college, Dennis had a conversation with his uncle Leo Hollingsworth “I just don’t want a job uncle Leo I want a career”. Uncle Leo encourage Dennis to pursue an Engineering License through the City of Omaha Apprenticeship Program. While working at Roberts Dairy at nights, Dennis completed his classes during the day successfully earning his engineering license. A few months later Dennis was hired on at OPS as a Building Engineer.

Dennis was employed with Omaha Public School for 35 years and within those years Dennis was also a SEIU Chief Union Steward for 22.5 years. Dennis retired from both jobs in March 2018.

Dennis was the Founder of Omaha United Track Team, where we competed, against some of the top track and field teams locally and regionally. One of Dennis proudest moments was when Aries Phillips honored and recognize as Track Athlete of The Year.

Dennis, was truly family man our son DJ meant the world to him and he loved his nieces and nephew, Ced, Deidre, Bri, Nelle, Jay, Tom and Alexandra (Pie).

Dennis and I have been together for twenty-one years with eleven being married. We kept an ongoing tradition of dedicating meaningful love songs that reflected our love, togetherness and devotion, but must importantly the fun of being spiritually committed to loving each other in the eyesight of God, family and friends. Today is not just a memorial for Dennis, you all have been a part of our beautiful love story.

Lois Allen-Hopgood

Frances Elizabeth (Caniglia) Connely

September 4th, 1931-January 18th, 2022

 

Born September 4th, 1931 in Omaha, Nebraska to Samuel and Tina Caniglia, Frances Elizabeth Connely, affectionately referred to as Fran or Cici by those who knew her best, passed away on January 18th, 2022 surrounded by her loving family. Fran grew up in Omaha and graduated from Omaha Central High School. She married the love of her life, Donald W. Connely, Sr. on September 10th, 1955 and together they raised 4 children. She always put family first and was an extremely proud matriarch no matter where life took them for Don’s job in the Air Force; from Nebraska, to Alaska, to Washington D.C., to Hawaii, to Colorado, and back to Omaha. Never short on words, she always knew the right thing to say but was never afraid to spar and give you her opinion and always had a joke, smile, or laugh even in the worst of moments. She also knew how to cook like no other, which she attributed to her strong Italian roots. Fran was also a dedicated, life-long Catholic and longtime attendee of Omaha’s St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and in her later years, St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church. She didn’t fear death and we are comforted knowing she has been reunited with her husband in heaven who she oftentimes spoke of missing.

 

Fran was preceded in death by her husband, Donald W. Connely, Sr.; her father, Samuel Caniglia; her mother, Concetta (Tina) Butera Caniglia; her sister, Carolyn Caniglia; and her brother, Tony Caniglia. Frances is survived by her brothers Tom Caniglia (Carolyn), Ted Caniglia (Marilyn); sister-in-law, Pat Caniglia; brother-in-law, Robert Connely; daughter Cheryl Rose (William); son Donald Connely, Jr. (Vicki); daughter Kristine Connely; son, Todd Connely; grandkids Meghan Sunblad (Kyle); Kelly Donnelly (Sean); Alison Pitnick; Carri Hughes (Matthew); Kati Tasich (Ryan); Jeff Connely; Alexander Connely; Giselle Connely; Garrett Connely; Hannah Hughes; Collin Hughes; and Delainey Hughes, as well as 5 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and others. 

 

Her visitation will be on Sunday, January 23rd from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with Rosary service at 1:00 p.m. at Roeder Mortuary, 2727 N. 108th St. Internment 9:30 a.m. Monday, January 24th at Forest Lawn Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her husband. This will be followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 5419 N 114th St. 

  Robert “Boomer” S. Nelson, Jr.

12/13/1953 – 1/16/2022

Age 68 – Boomer was in the Heating & Air business for over 40 years, owning his own company for 37 years. He was active in sponsoring and coaching women’s softball. He loved boating, spent countless hours teaching people how to water ski & pulling tubers on the river.  Everyone who knew him, knew he would do anything to help friends & family. He was masterful at many things. Since his lifesaving double lung transplant in December of 2019.  He was able to accomplish a lot of things that gave him great pleasure. Last spring/summer he built a barn, with reclaimed wood.  He was very grateful to his organ donor and kept in touch with his family.  Boomer Loved dogs, but most of all, Boomer loved his Family, Friends & Fords.

Preceded in death by his parents, Robert “Bob” & Patricia Nelson; wife, Shirley A. Nelson; sisters, Linda Sturdevant, Barbara J. Samson and beloved niece, Tammy Gatrost. Survived by his son, James “Jim”; loving partner, Julie Monaco; granddaughters, Avery, Ella and Juniper Nelson; bonus family, Al (Jenny) Monaco, Nina (Sam) Toelle, Nick (Dani) Monaco; bonus grandchildren, Zander, Karson, Reid, Patrick, Olivia, David, Giovanni and a host of other loving family and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday (1/29/2022) from 2:00 – 6:00 PM at VFW – Post 2503, 8904 Military Rd, Omaha NE. In lieu of flowers memorials to the Humane Society or Live on Nebraska.

Blake L. Mahnke

6/18/1965 – 1/16/2022

Blake Lee Mahnke was born to Charles and Charlene Mahnke on June 18th, 1965 in St. Paul Nebraska. The family moved to Neligh, Ne for a short time and then to Brunswick, NE where Blake attended grade school. At the end of his 3′ grade year, the family moved to Alliance, NE where he would finish high school and graduate in 1983. He excelled in sports and was able to earn a baseball scholarship to Kearney State College where he pitched for the “Lopers” for 4 years. He graduated from Kearney State College in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. Shortly after graduation, he moved to Scottsdale, AZ and worked in Financial Services for 5 years before returning to Omaha, NE. In 1990, he was blessed with a son, Cody, and also welcomed a daughter in law, Alicia, in 2018. His financial background led him to work for several banks in the area before becoming a long time employee at U.S. Bank. He passed away on Sunday January 16, 2022 surrounded by family and friends in Omaha, Nebraska.

From an early age, Blake’s love of sports was very evident. He would play with his brothers in the backyard and it would be either baseball, basketball, football or some game they just decided to make up at the time. The love of sports also led him to follow some of his favorite teams and players. His baseball and football card collections were a favorite hobby growing up. It was like Christmas each time a new little pack of baseball cards was opened up to see which players he might get. He was a life-long Nebraska Cornhusker and San Francisco 49ers fan. He attended many Husker football games both home and away. He was in the stadium for some of their biggest moments and for some of the biggest disappointments. Either way, he loved the whole atmosphere of college football game days and the friendships, both old and new, that bonded during those times. His other passion was golf and he would try to play as often as possible. The anticipation of 18 holes with his son or some of his buddies was something he always cherished. It certainly allowed that competitive streak in him to come out long after the baseball days were over.

He is preceded in death by his Mother Charlene Mahnke and survived by his father Charles Mahnke, Son Cody Schenck-Mahnke (Alicia), brothers Craig and Brian (Susie), niece Darby, nephew Brady, several Aunts and Uncles and many cousins.
