Mary Ellen Blackamore

Mary Ellen Blackamore went to be with her Savior on August 23, 2019. She was born on May 20, 1932 to the late Harry and Mary Ellen Long in Tuscumbia, Al. She was 1 of 10 children and the 5th born. Mary accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of Mt Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Sheffield, Al. She received her formal education at Leighton Training School and graduated from Sterling High in 1951. After graduation, she moved to Waukegan, Ill and was employed by Downey Military Base. While at Downey, she soon caught Warner Blackamore’s eyes and they married on July 28, 1956. Six children were born to this union and they recently celebrated 63 years of marriage.
Mary and Warner moved to Omaha, Ne in 1960 and she joined Faith Temple COGIC under the leadership of the late Bishop Vernon Richardson. She had a passion for children and served in the Children Ministry teaching: Sunday School, Sunshine Band, Vacation Bible School and she mentored the Jr. Ushers. She loved her church family and faithfully served as a member of The Inspirational Choir, Jr and Sr Mothers Board, Sr. Usher, and various other auxiliaries.
She retired from Methodist Hospital after over 20 years of service. After retirement she worked with special needs children at JP Lord School. She then became co-owner of “Nanas Little Blessings Daycare”
Mary was loved by those who knew her. She was preceded in death by her brothers: John Lewis Long, Harry Long, Joe Turner Long; sisters: Annie Mabel Pruitt, Sadie Mae Cobbs, Mildred Beatrice Stewart, Barbara Jean Johnson, and Dorothy Marie Hailstock; grand daughter: DeAndria Marie Blackamore
She leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her home going: her sister Altha Pearl Nunrey, her children: Yacawana Denise Blackamore, Bomani Kamau Blackamore, LaVora Valencia Blackamore, Twyla Donta Blackamore, Courtney Deandra Blackamore, and Coeta Denell Blackamore, 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, Godsons: Calvin Gould, Gary Fowler, and Trenton Hall. A host of devoted nieces, nephews, special friend- Edna Bowling, and The Golden Girls: Sis Duncan, Sis Oham, Sis Lee.
Visitaion: 5:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday, August 29, 2019 at Roeder Mortuary, 4932 Ames Ave.
Funeral Service: 11:00 AM Friday, August 30, 2019 at Faith Temple COGIC, 2108 Emmet St., Omaha, NE.
