Larry Robert Lamberty, (MD)
11/19/1945 – 3/19/2021
Dr. Larry Robert Lamberty was born in Tilden, Nebraska, and later moved to Seward with his family. After graduating from high school with honors, Larry attended Midland College in Fremont, where he also graduated with honors.
Always one of the “smartest people in the room,” Larry’s most intelligent decision was marrying the love of his life, Elaine Bender, in 1967. Together, they faced and overcame many life obstacles, and had three children (Kamela, Bob, Ben) who kept things interesting. Despite working long hours and draining shifts, Larry always did his best to support his kids in all their interests and endeavors. Tragedy struck the family on December 4, 1990, when his only daughter Kam was killed in a car accident. Forever changed, Larry poured his efforts into work, making sure no parent would have to endure the death of a child due to poor medical care after a traumatic accident.
At his place of work, the emergency room at St. Joseph’s Hospital and later the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Dr. Lamberty modeled his strong beliefs for all his colleagues. He believed that efficiency was important so all patients could receive timely attention and treatment. He believed that everyone should do what they are supposed to do–and do it well. If you weren’t performing up to his standards, he let you know. There was also a very caring side to this driven doctor. He kept a significant amount of personal money at work so he could help patients pay for prescriptions if they were unable.
Outside of work, Larry leveraged his knowledge and expertise for the betterment of others, too. Countless “office visits” in the Lamberty kitchen or phone consults for family & friends was the norm, not the exception–and Larry was always willing to help. Later in his career, Dr. Lamberty always took great joy in teaching Elaine’s Kindergarten students “how to be a doctor.”
After retirement, the role of grandpa became the focus of Larry’s efforts and joy. His grandsons, Kamren and Samuel, were always excited to see grandpa and have the chance to play. At any given moment, Dr. Lamberty could be seen on the floor wearing a Spider-man mask and having a “tickle fight” with boys or wearing an apron to act as a storyboard for one of the novice story-tellers. This was a side of Larry that was reserved for his grandsons–and no one else.
Obviously, Larry Lamberty impacted many lives in a myriad of ways, never wanting to take credit. He preferred to do the work and watch from a distance as the things he did made a difference.
We can only hope to carry on his selfless legacy.
