Thomas J. Imray, M.D. was born November 11, 1939 in Milwaukee, WI. He was the only child to George and Genevieve Imray.
He attended grade school and high school in Milwaukee, WI. He also attended Marquette University and Marquette Medical School, now known as The Medical College of Wisconsin, graduating in 1965.
In 1963, he married his high school sweetheart Carla Rake. In 1965 they moved to San Francisco for his internship at St. Mary’s Hospital. The following year they moved to Minneapolis, MN where Tom began his four-year radiology residency at the University of Minnesota. During this time Tom and Carla resided in officers’ quarters at Fort Snelling. They also welcomed their first son John and daughter Jean while in MN.
Avoiding Vietnam Tom was assigned to Japan and the family moved with him to Camp Zama. Tom was head of the radiology department at the Army hospital. This experience provided many travel adventures throughout Asia. Their son Jeff was born in Sagamihara, Japan. Quoting Tom, he would say “I was in the Army 3 years, 1 month and 5 days.”
Back to Milwaukee in 1973, Tom was on the radiology faculty at the Medical College of Wisconsin. In 1980, the beaches and warm weather of California lured us to move to Tustin where Tom joined the radiology faculty at the University of California, Irvine.
In 1982, the family moved to Omaha, NE and Tom was Chair of the Radiology Department for UNMC. For 23 years he taught many residents at the University, he loved teaching! Many of his former residents have kept in touch and Tom was always excited to hear from them.
Tom and Carla joined Friendship Force, an international organization with opportunities to explore new countries and cultures. They hosted travelers in their home and made friends around the world. They visited France, Japan, Australia (twice, 18-hour plane trip), Netherlands, Czech Republic, Russia, Italy, Africa, Brazil, England, Scotland, Ireland, Belgium, Cyprus, Germany, New Zealand. Many other destinations with friends Bob and Linda Dreessen.
Tom and Carla spent winters in Maui and then in Tucson. Also traveled to Portland and San Diego often to visit their sons and grandchildren. They loved college basketball, especially the Marquette Warriors (now Golden Eagles) and went to regional basketball games and several Final Four Tournaments. They also had season tickets for the College World Series and Tom attended with packets of mayo for his hotdogs.
About four years ago Tom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Recently entered a memory facility, it was 4 minutes from Carla and Jean and they spent most evenings watching tv, and holding hands with Tom.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife Carla, and his children; John (Tracy Patrick), Jean and Jeff (Jackie). Grandchildren, Logan, Sydney and Kaia (Valerie-her mom) and a host of friends.
