Life of Shirley Virgina Corbino
Shirley Virginia Corbino was born to James and Ernestine Dulin, February 3, 1935 in Omaha, Nebraska. She was preceded in death by her parents, son; Michael Corbino, brother; Jerry Dulin, sister; Margret White and grandson; Troy “Scoobie” Pittman.
Shirley attended Long Elementary and Central High School in Omaha and later attended Allhouse Cosmetology School. After a while and having family in New York, she made the decision to move there. She loved “The Big Apple” and would live there for the next 30 years.
While living in New York she joined the Stallwart Pillar of the African American Community, Abyssinian Baptist Church under the pastorate of Dr. Calvin O. Butts III, where she was a dedicated and faithful worker who was beloved by all. During her membership tenure she was named “Unsung Heroine of Abyssinian”. She served as President of the Entertainment Ministry, she was also a member of the Missionary Ministry and the Satellite Ministry.
Shirley began a banking career at the Chase Manhattan Bank on Wall Street, working in the International Division. Shirley loved to travel and did so extensively. Even though her many travels took her from the Greek Islands to the Caribbean, Europe and more, she never missed coming home to Native Omaha Days to be with family and friends being called the nickname that only family could call her because she knew it meant nothing but love and it had to be family such as her favorite cousin, Beverly A. Johnson or her lifelong friend, Beverly Seay Johnson.
After retiring from the bank, she made the decision to move back home to be with family. Upon her return, she became a faithful and dedicated member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, where she not only was present but participated in everything, she made a commitment to join. She was a Deaconess, worked on the Scholarship Committee, was a supporter of the Youth Ministry and a member of Women’s Ministry just to name a few. As a faithful member of the New Era State Convention Auxiliary, Shirley worked diligently on the Registration Committee and traveled on each occasion to various cities for the Annual National Convention, U.S.A. Inc.
She also was very active in the community activities such as the Jazzy Seniors at the Christ Child Center, playing her favorite card game at the Adams Center and volunteered part time at the Love’s Jazz & Art Center as a hostess.
Shirley loved life and lived it to the fullest until her health began to fail. Her smile, wit and contagious personality will be sorely missed by all who had the opportunity to know her and call her by name.
Shirley leaves precious memories to her 5 granddaughters; Tracy Pittman ( Damion Bush), Kelly Pittman ( Brian Rweikiza), O’Donna Biggs all of Omaha, Nebraska, Tobie Corbino, Atlanta, Georgia and Essence De’Chabert, Richmond, Virginia, 5 great-grandchildren; Hayden Singleton, Atlanta, Georgia, Preston Woodall, Kelsey Pettis, Ryleigh Bush and Troy Bush, all of Omaha, Nebraska and a multitude of family and friends.
Visitation: Friday, May 1st from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Roeder Mortuary 50th Ames Chapel.
Graveside Service: Saturday, May 2nd 10:30 AM Forest Lawn Cemetery.
