Jackie (Jack) Lee Moyer was born on January 30th, 1942 to James Lee and Bernice (Marsh) Moyer in Fort Madison, Iowa. He and his sister Wannete were raised in Fort Madison, where Jack enjoyed playing baseball as a boy and could often be found up to his latest shenanigans with his childhood friends. Jack graduated from Fort Madison High School, class of 1960. He attended college at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, IA for his Bachelors of Business. He held close bonds with the class of 1960 throughout his entire life, and remained close with his childhood friends.

In his college days, Jack enjoyed going to the motorcycle races. He met the love of his life, Judith Rae Spurling, who also attended the University of Northern Iowa for her career as a teacher. Judy was a coffee and tea girl in the senior girl’s dormitory, while Jack worked there as a dishwasher. The girls would always have to pass the dishwashers to get their meals, and Judy and Jack soon started chatting each night. One day on her way to a church group Jack was driving by, and he ended up joining her for church group. They soon started dating. Jack often bragged about Judy being the smartest and prettiest student. Jack and Judy married on June 7th, 1964 in Judy’s hometown of Lake View, IA. They were married for 56 years.

In 1967 Jack was drafted to serve his country in the Vietnam War. Months later, he and Judy welcomed their first child, Steven James Moyer. While Jack served in Vietnam, Judy resided in Lake View, IA with her parents and son Steve. Jack was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in connection with military operations against a hostile in Vietnam. He held the rank of First Lieutenant in the United States Army. Jack served his country from July of 1967 to August of 1969.

After his service in Vietnam, Jack and Judy moved to Denison, IA where Jack was employed with Iowa Beef Processing (IBP). Jack and Judy were expecting their second child, and were surprised with the birth of their twins, Michele Marie and Michael Lee Moyer. Jack was transferred with IBP to Fort Dodge, IA, Sioux City, IA and then West Point, NE where Jack and Judy put down their roots and raised their children. In 1993 they moved to Omaha, NE when Jack accepted a position with Stone Container Company. Jack was an avid tennis and racket ball player during his time in West Point and Omaha. He and his West Point friends held the proud position of being one of the pioneers of fantasy football.

In 2000, Jack was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia due to his exposure to agent orange in Vietnam. He retired from Stone Container Company in 2006. Jack and Judy were involved members at St. Thomas Lutheran Church, and enjoyed golfing together, playing keno, traveling to spend time with friends and family, and most dear to Jack, spending time with his grandchildren and cheering them on along the sidelines of their sporting events. Jack never knew a stranger, and always made friends wherever he went. He was a member of the Sinclair Coffee Club, where he enjoyed having a cup of coffee with his friends during the week around 5 a.m. In his later years he could always be found taking up a new hobby, from playing the banjo to learning how to draw. Jack was most proud of his roles as a husband, father, grandfather, and veteran. After a lengthy and courageous battle with leukemia, Jack made the ultimate sacrifice for his country, passing away in the comfort of his own home with his family at his side on November 20th, 2020 from the exposure to agent orange.

He is proceeded in death by his parents, James and Bernice, his sister Wannete, and his father and mother-in-law Ken and Leona Spurling. He is survived by his wife, Judy Spurling Moyer; his children, Steve Moyer, Michele (Don) Neily, and Michael (Erin) Moyer. He leaves behind his beloved grandchildren; Kylynn and her fiancé Nick, Seth, Margaret (Maggie), Casey, Jacob, Michael, Samuel, and Dylan.
