Georgia A. Jean-Baptiste was born Georgia Ann Brown September 13, 1941 to the late Isaiah and Agnes Brown. She was the 11^th  child out of 12 and the youngest girl of her five sisters and 6 brothers.Georgia had a thirst for learning from an early age and always knew that she wanted to become a teacher. Her father, a sharecropper in Louisiana, always knew that she would go on to do great things in her life.

Georgia attended Grambling College after graduating from high school at the top of her class in 1961. She received  her undergraduate degree in education and eventually met her husband Charles Jean-Baptiste. The two married in December of 1965.

Georgia began her teaching career in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. After moving to California, she gave birth to her first child, Charles Jean-Baptiste II, in Chico California on March 13, 1968. The Jean-Baptiste family eventually settled in Omaha, NE where Georgia taught 30 years in the Omaha Public Schools. During this time she had her second son Decua Jean-Baptiste on April 7,1971. Georgia went on to earn her Masters Degree + 36 hours from the University of Nebraska Omaha during the 1976-1977 school year.

Among her interests, Georgia enjoyed dancing, scrapbooking, gardening and traveling. Above all she enjoyed her friends and family. She was known as the fun aunt and was affectionately called “Aunt Dean” by her nieces and nephews. She could always be seen smiling, joking and laughing. She had a zest and enthusiasm for life.

Georgia was diagnosed with Amytropic Lateral Sclerosis(ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s disease in June of 2018. She was the model of courage, patience and poise as she faced this unwinnable battle. She passed away peacefully at Maple Crest Center on the evening of January 20, 2020. She will be greatly missed by all.

Georgia passed away on Monday, January 20, 2020 peacefully at Maple Crest Center after living with ALS for 2 years. Georgia was born in Opelousas, LA September 13, 1941 to Isaiah and Agnes Brown. Georgia leaves behind her two loving sons, Charles Jean-Baptiste II and Decua Jean-Baptiste; siblings, Paul Brown and Josephine Hardin; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Georgia’s passion was education and teaching.  She received her undergraduate degree from Grambling College and her Masters degree +36 hours from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Her teaching career expanded over 49 years. She taught in Breaux Bridge, LA for two years and for the Omaha Public Schools for 30 years. After retiring, she became a substitute teacher and subbed in many schools for 17 years. Georgia enjoyed gardening, scrap booking, traveling and spending time with her family and friends. She was a joy to everyone who knew her.

Please join us for her “Celebration of Life” to be held Wednesday, January 29^th at Roeder Mortuary 2727 N. 108^th St. Omaha, NE from 5-7 PM. The Delta Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha will present an “Ivy Celebration” from 6:30-7:00. Georgia will be buried in her home state of Louisiana in the city of Lake Charles at Combre Memorial Park where a full memorial and funeral service will be held.
