Eugene “Gene” F. Berhow, 94, of Bennington NE, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 26, 2022.

Gene is survived by his wife, Myrtle, his children, Melody (Bruce) Halldorson and Sonja (Ken) Cox, his grandchildren, Rachel (Steve) Balkovec and Sarah (Lenny) Kaczmarek, and his great-grandchildren, Drew Balkovec, Hadley Kaczmarek and Brinley Kaczmarek.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Lovella and Gulaine and his brothers, Marvin and Ronald.

The most definitive thing you can say about Gene is that he loved his family and was someone you could always count on, no matter what.

Gene was born on June 15, 1927 in Rake, Iowa. He moved with his family from Iowa, to Oregon and at one point to Montana. Once he was back home in Iowa, he met Myrtle Mikkelson in Forest City and when he saw her the first time, he knew he was going to marry her. He did indeed capture her heart, and the two were married on June 22, 1947. Not long after, they hit the road together with a small trailer house attached to the back of their car. Gene found work as a sprinkler fitter, and that was his profession for the next 40 years. In that time, he built a great life for his wife and two daughters. They traveled following the work for quite a few years, and Gene had many fun stories about their travels. They landed in Omaha, Nebraska in 1962, and finally found their “dream home” in 1969, an acreage where they lived for the next 51 years.

Family was the most important thing to Gene and one way to enjoy family was the camping he did with them. Many, many camping trips were taken, and a lot of fun times are remembered by all.

Not to be forgotten was Gene’s 1962 GT Hawk Studebaker. He loved and enjoyed that car whether it was getting it ready to show or just taking it on a Sunday afternoon road rally with the local club.
