Dorothy was born on February 11, 1927 to her parents Chris and Helma Thomsen. This gave her the distinction of being a part of the greatest generation and living through the dirty thirties.

She was the oldest of seven children, so she definitely knew what it was to share. After father broke his back, the family knew what it was to struggle through difficult and hard times. She helped out wherever she could, helping to raise her siblings or taking jobs to help support the family.

World War II found the United States entering the conflict in 1941. A young Tech Sergeant from Norfolk, Nebraska, discharged from the service on October 26, 1945, caught her eye and captured her heart. Dorothy and Bud married on November 4, 1945. They were both lifetime members of First Lutheran Church.

Those early days were full of adventure and excitement. Dad was always interested in construction so they moved to California for a while. Bud found work on a construction crew building contract houses out on the Mohave desert. Both struggled being so far away from home, and ultimately moved back to Omaha.

Greg was born first on October 30, 1946. The new family, back in Omaha, lived in various apartment settings. Steve was born July 29, 1950. The enlarging family moved into a new home, located in the Benson area in 1950, which dad built. Terri was born on may 14, 1953, she was the last child born to mom and dad.

During the 50’s and 60’s Dorothy saw mostly to rearing of the family and keeping the books for bud’s business (dad held down a full-time job during the day and worked nights to keep the family going.) Mom always seemed to find the time to care for her nieces and nephews, when she was called upon for help. Greg married first so the grandkids became the next source of pride.

In 1974 a new home was constructed way out in the country, just west of 120th street between Maple and Blondo. This was the first home constructed in the Park West subdivision. Mom and dad took real pride in this home. Dad with the yard and mom with her many, many flowers.

They both enjoyed having family come. Dad with his winter snowmobiling from the back yard, and mom ever busy in the kitchen. Loads of goodies and scrumptious meals. I never left the table hungry, and don’t think anyone else did either.

The 90’s were tough on mom, as dad battled colon cancer twice and suffered a stroke in 1997. She took care of dad through all of this, finally losing him on April 2, 2002.

Dorothy stayed in her home even after breaking her hip, damaging her leg and finally moving to Rolling Hills retirement ranch late June 2018. Their home was sold staying in the family. Rob and Suzy Boynton are now the proud owners.

As with all of us, 2020 was a tough year for mom, she caught covid at the care center, and swore she never recovered from it. 2021, mom ready to go to heaven, Jesus answered her prayers and mom entered eternal peace on August 21, 2021.

Grateful for having shared her life with us, are her remaining children Steve and Terri and their family members, including 5 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, 3 sisters-in-law and a host of nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, siblings, her husband Bud, son Greg, and granddaughter Staci.
