Janniver (Smith) Vala

Jan Vala was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on January 11th, 1955 to Hazel and Charles Smith. She graduated from Lincoln Southeast before attending Nebraska Wesleyan University, where she was a flute player and a Delta Zeta sorority sister. After graduating with a degree in Psychology and attending graduate school, she became a school psychologist for OPS. In 1977 Jan married Tim Vala, and for many years she supported their family while Tim focused on building their business, Vala’s Pumpkin Patch, in Gretna, Nebraska. Eventually she joined the business full time and together Jan and Tim created one of the largest agritainment destinations in the nation.

Jan was unfailingly kind, the heart of both the Vala family and the family business. She loved Star Wars, Harry Potter, The Beatles, and she collected Pez dispensers, lunchboxes and tea pots. As a Grandma, Jan always had time for a tea party! Jan is survived by her father and husband, as well as her 3 daughters, Kirsten Fong, Kyla Shaver and Kelsey Donovan; and 5 grandkids, Zoe Fong (7), Ethan Fong (4), Freya Shaver (6), Stefan Shaver (3), and Elias Shaver (9 months).

Jan was a well-loved member of the community, and all who knew her are welcome to attend visitation, Wednesday, September 8th, 3pm to 7pm at Roeder Mortuary, Gretna, Nebraska; and a Celebration of Jan’s Life, Thursday, September 9th, 11am at Vala’s Pumpkin Patch, in the Pavilion. Jan was a voracious reader and always had a stack of books she was reading through. In lieu of flowers the Vala family requests donations which will be sent to The Gretna Library Foundation in her honor.

Tracy S. Swalberg

10/18/1962 – 9/3/2021

Bellevue – Tracy had a kindred, pure and joyous spirit. She was always thinking of others before herself. There were few days when she wasn’t escaping into a good book. Throughout her life she was a widowed mother of her two boys Quinn and Todd, who she did anything and everything to ensure they were fed, clothed and safe every day. As a mother, Tracy had immense passion and dedication to her family and wanted to be sure that they would have a good life. While going to school for her Medical Administration degree Tracy would study and work tirelessly to succeed for her family. Her heart was always rooted in a pure place that drove her to happiness no matter what she was facing in life. Tracy found joy and peace in small things like sunny days, books, flowers and nature and watching movies at the cinema. When she was young, Tracy grew up in Springfield Nebraska and had loved being surrounded by nature and animals. Though she had always stayed close to home, Tracy loved to travel and see the world. Whenever Tracy could she absolutely loved spending time with her granddaughter, Braelynn. There was nothing that could bring a bigger smile to her face than when she was with her family. We can never replace the light, spirit and love that Tracy was to the world, we would do anything to have her here with us. We will always carry our love for her while she journeys to a better place.

Preceded in death by husband Douglas Grant Swalberg, father Clair Sutton, brother Daren Sutton.  Survived by sons Quinn (Lyndsey), Todd, granddaughter Braelynn, mother Eileen Sutton, sister Cindy (Robert) Sedlak, niece Madison Sutton, nephew Mason Sutton, many family and friends.
